Prepping Your Home for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season brings with it the potential for powerful storms that can wreak havoc on our homes and communities. However, by taking proactive steps and preparing ahead of time, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage and keep your family safe. Here are some things that can help you ensure you and your family are ready for whatever the weather may bring.

  • Develop a Family Emergency Plan - Create a family emergency plan that outlines evacuation routes, meeting points, and contact information for emergency services and loved ones. Ensure that all family members are familiar with the plan and know what to do during a hurricane.

  • Stock Up on Supplies - Prepare an emergency supply kit containing essentials such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents. Make sure you have enough supplies to sustain your family for several days in case of power outages or evacuation orders.

  • Trim Trees and Shrubs - Overhanging branches and overgrown shrubs can pose a threat to your home during a hurricane. Trim back trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of branches breaking off and causing damage. Properly dispose of any debris to prevent it from becoming a hazard in the storm.

  • Check Roof and Gutters - Inspect your roof for loose or damaged shingles, as well as any signs of leaks or weak spots. Repairing these issues ahead of time can help prevent water damage to your home. Clean out gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage and prevent water from backing up.

  • Stay Informed – Read and or listen to weather forecasts and advisories from reliable sources such as the National Weather Service or local news outlets. Keep an eye out for evacuation orders, road closures, and other important updates that could affect your safety.

If there is a potential for bad weather in your area, consider the following:

  • Secure Outdoor Items - Start by securing any outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds. Patio furniture, decorations, and even trash cans should be anchored down or brought indoors to prevent them from causing damage during a storm.

  • Reinforce Windows and Doors - Windows and doors are vulnerable points in your home during a hurricane. Consider installing storm shutters or boarding up windows with plywood to protect against flying debris and strong winds. Ensure that all doors are equipped with sturdy locks and hinges to prevent them from being forced open.

  • Secure Garage Doors - Garage doors are often overlooked but can be vulnerable to damage during a hurricane. Reinforce them with braces or replace them with hurricane-resistant doors if possible. Consider unplugging automatic garage door openers to prevent damage from power surges.

Preparing ahead of time is key to staying safe and minimizing damage during hurricane season in the Mid-Atlantic region. By securing outdoor items, reinforcing windows and doors, trimming trees, checking your roof and gutters, securing garage doors, stocking up on supplies, developing a family emergency plan, and staying informed, you can help protect your home and loved ones from the effects of severe weather. Let's take action now to ensure we're ready for whatever the season may bring.
